The Potencial Benefits and Problems of GM Food - 981 Words

The Potential Benefits and Problems of Genetically Modified Food Every time we go to the supermarket or any grocery store, we do not know whether the vegetables, fruits or even meats being sold are genetically modified. To make this situation worse, most consumers do not pay much attention to what they are eating when they are actually devouring genetically engineered food. Despite this ignorance, more and more people, including researchers, are becoming aware of the impact of genetically modified food, and the debate over the issue of whether genetic engineering should be stopped from modifying organisms never ceases. This essay will discuss what genetically modified (GM) food is, and the benefits and problems of genetically modified†¦show more content†¦Aside from human health, genetically modified organisms have serious negative impacts on the environment. One of those is the effect on pollinators. Most of the earth s plants depend on insects for pollination and it is crucial that agricultural activities do not disrupt this natural eco system (Padgette, 1996). However, genetically modified crops do not fulfill this fundamental requirement. Even though genetically modified crops are more resistant to pests and viruses and can survive even under the harshest conditions, modified genes from genetically engineered crops can be transferred into other wild species, causing various unwanted outcomes (Smith, 2005). Transgenic genes from genetically modified crops can be transferred in various ways to different species, including plants, insects, bacteria and viruses. Genetically modified foods have the potential to solve many of the world s hunger and malnutrition problems, and to help protect and preserve the environment by increasing yield and reducing reliance upon chemical pesticides and herbicides. Yet there are many challenges ahead for governments, especially in the areas of safety testing, regulation, international policy and food labeling. Many people

Chapter2 Review of Related Literature and Studies

Chapter II Review of Related Literature and Studies This chapter presents the literature and related studies which have direct bearing on this study. It also discusses the values reflected in the proverbs and the proverb as a reflection of Filipino character, its function in the society, its nature and purpose, its stylistic peculiarity and its significance in Filipino culture. Folklore Prof. Damiana Eugenio (2002), a renowned Filipina folklorist, said that there is no universally accepted definition for the word â€Å"folklore†. But she gave a description that folklore is any form of knowledge that is handed down from generation to generation that portrays the way of life of ancestors of the chosen ethnic group can be considered part of†¦show more content†¦This shows that many people are interested in proverbs. Lopez (2006) further added that the important rule in the study of folksaying is not to cite what one people say in one culture but to explain what another p eople say for another culture. For her, any folklore material translated to another language suffers in the process of translation. Thus, the definition of proverb is necessary for serious research on this genre. Many definitions of proverb have actually been made. According to Lydia Arguilla as cited by Lopez (2006) â€Å"Proverbs are a people’s soul†, while Carmelo Jamias as also cited by Lopez (2006) said that â€Å"Proverbs are the wisdom of the elders†. However, the definition of the proverb as â€Å"Folk wisdom† is rejected in the Philippine culture because of the existence of â€Å"crossed proverbs†Ã¢â‚¬â€¢two proverbs that recommend two contrary kinds of action. Lopez (2006) continued that the biggest problem in the Philippine proverbial studies that should be solved is the total neglect of the context of the materials collected. The study of proverbs requires not only knowing the content of the material, but also knowing when to use them b ecause usage is the most important aspect of proverbs. She added that there is distinction between recording the text of proverbs andShow MoreRelatedMethodology And Methods Of Public Open Space Management1511 Words   |  7 PagesChapter2: Methodology and Methods 2.1 Introduction This chapter provides an overview of the methods used in the research. Lava Caves and Scoria/Cinder Cones free essay sample

Cinder cones are simple volcanoes which have a bowl-shaped crater at the summit and rarely rise more than a thousand feet above their surroundings. They usually are created of eruptions from a single vent, and are composed solely of lava remnants. Cinders of lava, blown into the air during eruptions, break into small fragments that fall into a pile around the vent. The pile forms an oval-shaped small volcano, as shown in this picture. During each eruption, hot molten lava was ejected into the air from a vent. It cooled, solidified, and fell back to earth as ash, cinders, popcorn-sized particles (â€Å"scoria†), and larger â€Å"bombs† as much as three feet in diameter. The larger, heavier material accumulated around the vent to build a cone-shaped volcano with a crater depression in the centre. These ejected materials will settle in an area close to the crater and will start piling up until the cone is formed. Gas-charged lava is blown violently out of the volcano’s central vent, and the ash and rocks rain down around the vent. After multiple eruptions, the volcano takes on the familiar cone shape, with the erupted rubble forming the steep slopes. Cinder cones rarely grow much taller than 300 meters above their surroundings, and they’re common in western North America, and wherever there’s volcanic activity.
